Honoring Our Veterans

In a world of seemingly endless amounts of movies and depicting superheroes we lose site of the true heroes that walk beside us every day. I often write about “my grandfather this and my grandfather that”, well, my grandfather was a proud veteran; yet, rarely spoke of his time in the service in my presence. The times he did it was with great reverence and admiration for those who served with him.
Wilmer McClintic, after serving in WWII, came back to his hometown of Monticello where he later opened McClintic Insurance, became Mayor of Monticello, and loved and served his family and God.

From the time he started the agency, he closed the office for Veteran’s Day, knowing and wanting to pay his respect, even in this small way, to our military. My father, my uncles, and now my husband and myself are following in his footsteps.

And to his family for their amazing example of love to God, Family, and Nation.
True heroes…those that walk beside us…can be seen if we just take the time to look.
It is often said that someone doesn’t see the forest for the trees. More and more this seems to ring true of how people view the world and the people in it. I challenge you to be different. Start this day, Veteran’s Day. Take a look at the pictures and names below of the Service Men and Women who have and who are served our great country. Each of these individuals take on the embodiment of Wikipedia’s definition of someone, “who is dedicated to fighting the evil of their universe, protecting the public, and usually battling (super) villains.”
Who else do you see every day that you know nothing about? There are many hidden heroes walking among us. Let us not be blinded by the horrors and atrocities that we our world feeds, but instead reach out and open our hearts to each other and focus and the good. If our Veterans are willing to give their lives for us can’t we at least become a little more grateful and kind and forgiving to one another?
One last thought that struck me deeply as I draw a close to this Veteran’s Day Tribute…with every name I typed and every picture I moved and resized and yet re-sized twenty more times, and with each date and branch and battle fought that I read, and of my own loved ones I listed, each one of these heroes gave for us, not for themselves. It probably hit me the hardest, for whatever reason, when I received the picture of a newly found acquaintance who I have never met, and probably never will; yet, I know this Veteran fought for my freedom and that of my loved ones and all of you, just like everyone else on this page did for millions of Americans across this Country whom they too will never meet. Thank you, all from the bottom of our hearts, for the service you have given; there is not enough ink nor paper nor words to scratch the surface of our gratitude. God Bless.
